What Is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities or specific medical conditions.

If you are trying to understand what Medicare is and how it works, this page will give you a clear starting point. We’ll walk through who qualifies, what Medicare covers, and how the different parts of Medicare fit together.

Who Qualifies for Medicare?

Most people become eligible for Medicare when they turn 65. However, eligibility can also apply in other situations.

You may qualify for Medicare if you are:

  • Age 65 or older
  • Under 65 with a qualifying disability
  • Diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
  • Diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease)

Eligibility is often tied to work history or a spouse’s work history, especially for premium-free Part A coverage.

What Does Medicare Cover?

Medicare helps cover many types of healthcare services, but it does not cover everything.

At a high level, Medicare helps cover:

  • Hospital stays
  • Doctor visits and outpatient care
  • Preventive services
  • Some home health services
  • Prescription drugs (depending on your coverage)

However, Medicare may not fully cover things like long-term care, most dental care, vision, or hearing services.

The Different Parts of Medicare

Medicare is divided into different parts, each covering a different type of care.

Medicare Part A

Helps cover inpatient care in a hospital, hospice, skilled nursing facility care, and home-health care.

Medicare Part B

Helps cover medically necessary services like doctor visits, outpatient care, and preventive services.

Medicare Part C

An alternative way to receive Medicare benefits through private insurance approved by Medicare.

Medicare Part D

Private insurance that helps cover the cost of outpatient generic and name-brand prescription drugs.

How Medicare Coverage Works

Original Medicare

Includes Part A and Part B. Many people add prescription drug coverage and may choose additional coverage to help with out-of-pocket costs.

Medicare Advantage

An alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies. These plans often bundle multiple types of coverage into one plan.

Medicare Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

One of the most important things to understand is that Medicare decisions are not the same for everyone.

Your timing, your work situation, and your healthcare needs all play a role in how Medicare may work for you.

What Should You Do Next?
